The Finest Quality at the Most Reasonable Prices
Cherry Optical Holography offer custom holographic facilities.
We maintain several large vibration-isolation optical labs for Mastering and
Copying holograms. Our custom holography uses continuous wave, silver-halide
technology.
Custom Holograms feature a wide angle of
view, maximum image depth and projection, clean sharp imagery, and relaxed
stability requirements. We believe our technical quality to be comparable to the
best holography in the world today.
Our custom display holograms are usually
created in a two step process. First, we make a laser-viewable "master" hologram
from the original subject. This subject can be a three-dimensional model or
object. We can work from your object, or create a three dimensional object for
you. Graphics, jpegs, black and white photographs, and transparencies can also be
made into effective holograms. We can provide or modify a holographic design for you, for
maximum utilization of the three dimensional qualities available in holography.

When completed, the laser-viewable master hologram is holographically copied
as a reflection or transmission hologram. These copies are illuminated by a
simple, quartz-halogen point light source, such as track lighting commonly
provides.
|
Reflection Holograms
typically have high contrast black backgrounds and full vertical and horizontal
parallax. The light source for reflection holograms comes from the front.
Reflection copies are available on glass plates in sizes 8 by 10 inches and 12
by 16 inches, and on film laminated to Plexiglas in sizes 20 by 24 inches up to
32 by 36 inches.
Transmission
Holograms are thin film windows into a world of great depth and projection. They
have full horizontal parallax, but go through a spectral rainbow of color
changes on the vertical. Transmission holograms are available on film laminated
to Plexiglas in sizes 21 by 29 inches and 32 by 36 inches. Larger sizes up to 40
inches by 6 feet are available in custom formats.

Here follows a
few of our custom holograms, chosen to illustrate the different techniques we
use.

Microscope
This hologram of a microscope was created
for Miles Pharmaceutical Company
for a trade show. The eyepiece projects out about five inches. When the viewer looks into the eyepiece of the
microscope, they see a magnification of the company's logo and a brief description of
the product.
This
"Hologram-within-Hologram" technique was pioneered by Greg Cherry. Visit
the Telescope and Binoculars for more
holograms using space within space. |

Tea Cup
(Master for Photopolymer Replication)
Tea cup with holographic fish swimming
inside the cup. Created for a Dupont's Photopolymer division to test
promote their
holographic recording materials. Images from this hologram - holographic
clouds!- form the backdrop of

Constitution
The Franklin Institute commemorated the
anniversary of the
signing
of the Declaration of Independence by commissioning and displaying these holograms.

Wired?/Wireless
Two Channel Reflection Hologram made for the
Persoft Corporation to introduce their new wireless connectors. 20" by 24"
on film laminated to Plexiglas.
Multiple channel holography magically portrays several
direction-dependent views occupying the same film space.

Caliper
& Egg
A caliper
forms fringes on an egg in this double-exposure reflection hologram. It
shows interferometric fringes that can be used to measure the pressure the
caliper applies to the egg. The hologram was part of a standing exhibit of
26 holograms commissioned by Lawrence Berkeley Museum, California. |

Model
Making, Scene Design, and Animation of Real Objects.
These
images of holograms are small excerpts from three complex large format
transmission and reflection holograms made for a private client.
The Wind,
upper left, was a beeswax sculpture cast into clear resin. She's blowing
breaths of diffraction effects, crystalline cast leaves, and planes of
scrollwork.
Train
wheels, bottom left, were mechanically animated, then holographed, one
frame of actual movement at a time. Each finished reflection
hologram has thin hologram strips across the surface, forming
holographic wheel rotation.

Painting Time & Space
Hughs Holographic Division contracted for original
hologram Masters that they could replicate in their photopolymer
holographic recording material. Paint Time & Space, and Pegasus,
below, were two of the holographic images they copied into 11" by 15"
photopolymer material. Painting Time & Space has a projecting brush handle
painting a deep space scene; and clocks whose mechanized hands move
forward and backward. Hologram by Greg Cherry. |

Pegasus
A rearing
painted wax sculpture of the flying horse, Pegasus, has real wings,
modified, painted, and attached to the horse's sides. Molten glass forms a
deep scene backdrop in this Master created for Hughs Holographic Division.

Jet Plane
A commercial reflection hologram made for a private jet
manufacturer. The plane projects out 10 inches against a backdrop of
clouds. 20" by 24" on silver halide film laminated to glass.

Travel
A small
reflection hologram composite by Nancy
Gorglione. It was commissioned as part of a
triptych on travel for the Milk River Museum, Canada. 9, 4" by 5"
holograms, glass laminated to wood.

Race Horse Dream
A reflection hologram composite by Nancy Gorglione. The
exhibition was commissioned by the "Art & Technology" pavilion at the Los
Angeles County fair, whose theme was the horse. Collection of the artist. |

Dichroic Fish
There are
two versions of this leaded glass sculpture with dichroic fins, by Nancy
Gorglione. One is in Canada, and one is in the holographic collection
belonging to Jerry Miller. Jerry saw the first piece, pictured, left,
then commissioned a unique version for himself. It was Nancy Gorglione's
love of glass as an art medium that lead her to holography.
